Things to keep in mind before you apply.

How do credit cards work?

Our Platinum Mastercard® is a great credit card for students, but as a first-time cardholder, you may be wondering how they work. Credit cards establish a line of credit through which you can borrow funds from a lender. By opening one, you’re agreeing to pay back any borrowed funds under the agreed upon terms which includes things like credit limit, the annual percentage rate (APR), and other fees. When you use your card, you’ll need to make regular minimum payments to the account to cover the purchases. When possible, you should pay your balance off every month to avoid paying interest and other fees.

How does APR work?

When you use your student credit card and carry a balance, there's a cost associated for borrowing. This cost is also known as interest and is charged if you don’t pay your account in full before the grace period, or the time frame between the billing cycle’s end and the payment’s due date. This interest is typically set at an annual rate and referred to as the annual percentage rate (APR).

How can a student credit card help me build credit?

When developing a credit score, it's important to keep these things in mind: make regular payments on time and keep your balance low.

Payment history accounts for 35% of your credit score, so making those regular payments (in full if you can) goes a long way in helping build your credit.

The second-biggest impact to your score is the amount you owe. On top of the total you owe on your student credit card, your overall credit utilization is also taken into account. Your credit utilization rate is determined by taking the amount of credit you're using divided by your total credit limit. So if you have a balance of $250 on your card that has a $2,500 limit, your utilization rate is 10%. It's generally recommended to keep credit use under 30% of your total credit limit.

It's important to note that you might need a cosigner; however, you'll still be able to establish credit.

Our goal is to provide members with a loan decision within 24 hours after the application is received. Many times an answer can be given on the spot.
There is a $250 minimum amount for credit cards.
We don’t have any fees to complete a loan application. There’s a small fee for a refinance of a vehicle, motorcycle, boat, RV, or powersport.
We do not have a minimum credit score to apply for a loan. Many factors are taken into consideration for a loan decision than just a credit score.
While we don't offer a dedicated student credit card, we highly recommend our Platinum Mastercard® credit card. Students may need a cosigner to qualify.
