Explore the world of financial counseling.
Managing your money can often feel like a puzzle with too many pieces. You might be juggling goals like buying a house, paying down debt, or even saving for the future. So, where do you turn when you need help balancing it all?
Services, like financial counseling, are designed to help you put those pieces together. It provides personalized guidance to help you build confidence, create a clear plan, and achieve your financial goals.
In this article, we’ll explore what financial counseling is, how financial counselors can support you, and the unique benefits you can gain from their guidance. Plus, hear some words of wisdom from a few of our very own counselors!
What is financial counseling?
Financial counseling is a collaborative process where you work one-on-one with a trained professional to improve your money management. Unlike some services that focus on investing or wealth management, financial counseling centers on the practical, everyday aspects of your money. The primary goal is to empower you with the knowledge and habits needed for long-term financial health.
In other words, think of it as having a financial coach. A coach doesn't play the game for you, but they provide strategies, support, and accountability to help you win. This service is often offered for free by credit unions and non-profit organizations, making professional guidance accessible to everyone.
Financial counseling is about helping people realize they’re not stuck—they just need the right tools and support. When someone gains confidence in their finances, it can truly change their future.

What do financial counselors do?
Financial counselors are trained professionals dedicated to helping you navigate your personal finances. Many, like those at Clearview, are Certified Credit Union Financial Counselors (CCUFCs) and their role is to provide objective advice and support. They’re not there to sell you products but to educate and empower you.
Financial counselors can help you:
- Analyze your income and expenses to create a realistic budget that aligns with your goals.
- Develop a strategy to tackle credit card debt, student loans, or other obligations.
- Review your credit report with you and provide actionable steps to build or improve your credit score.
- Learn sustainable money management skills that will serve you for a lifetime.
It's important to note that financial counselors are not typically tax advisors, attorneys, or licensed investment advisors. Their focus is on practical financial management, not providing legal or investment advice.
We can really be whatever our members need us to be. At the core, I see my role as both a listener and an advocate, working together with you to find solutions that fit your life.

The benefits of financial counseling
Working with a financial counselor offers numerous advantages, whether you’re facing challenges or want to proactively improve your financial life.
One of the biggest benefits is gaining a clear, unbiased perspective on your finances. A counselor can help you see the whole picture, identify areas for improvement, and create a concrete action plan. This process reduces stress and replaces uncertainty with confidence. Furthermore, financial counseling is individualized. Your counselor listens to your unique goals and challenges to create a plan tailored specifically for you. In other words, they’re helping put the “personal” back into personal finances!
Another significant benefit is accountability. It’s easy to set financial goals but harder to stick with them. Regular follow-up sessions with financial counselors help you track your progress, celebrate wins, and make adjustments to your plan as needed. This ongoing support keeps you motivated and moving toward financial empowerment.
Financial counseling brings a fresh perspective to your unique situation. It helps you better understand the difference between needs and wants, so you can make adjustments that align with your goals without compromising what matters most to you.

What to expect during a Clearview financial counseling session
Knowing what to expect can make your first financial counseling session feel less intimidating. At Clearview, we make sure the process is designed to be supportive and confidential.
Your first session
Your initial appointment will likely last about an hour. This session is all about getting to know you and your financial situation, and your counselor will ask about your goals, income, debts, and any specific challenges you're facing. If you have a partner or spouse, it’s highly recommended that you attend together, as managing household finances is a team effort.
To make the most of this meeting, you’ll be asked to bring several documents, including:
- Recent pay stubs
- Statements for bills (utilities, insurance, etc.)
- A list of all your debts (credit cards, loans)
- Recent bank statements
- A copy of your credit report
Bringing this information allows your counselor to get a complete and accurate view of your finances from the start, ensuring the guidance they provide is effective and personalized.
Follow-up sessions
Financial counseling is not a one-time event. Follow-up sessions are usually shorter, around 45 minutes, and are crucial for long-term success. During these meetings, you and your counselor will review your progress, discuss any new challenges, and adjust your action plan. These check-ins provide the ongoing support needed to turn new behaviors into lasting habits. Your privacy is a top priority, and all information shared is held in the strictest confidence.
We’ll talk through your short- and long-term goals and take a look at your full financial picture, including your income, expenses, assets, and debts. Together, we’ll create a plan that works for you. You’ll have a few simple steps to focus on between sessions, and we’ll check in along the way to celebrate progress and adjust as needed to keep you on track.
