Our tips for how to save money on groceries are the greatest thing since sliced bread.
Now, here’s the icing on the cake! Saving money at the grocery store is easier than you may think. There are many habits everyone can implement into their grocery shopping routine to make sure you get the biggest bang for your buck – and maybe save a few while you’re at it!
Here are 6 ways to save some cold hard cash on those cold cuts.
1. Sign up for loyalty programs
Many stores offer customers loyalty programs to maximize their savings when shopping and can be one of the easiest ways to save money at the grocery store. The great news is that most are free to join! For those in the Pittsburgh area, you can sign up for a Giant Eagle Advantage Card in any store (including Market District locations) or conveniently online. Be sure to download the Giant Eagle app so you always have your card at the ready.
2. Clip coupons
Don’t be afraid to clip those coupons! Spend some time every week scouting out coupons in circulars in the mail. In many cases, once you sign up for a loyalty program at your local grocery store, they will offer digital coupons on their app. Combining both your loyalty program perks and coupons can help you save big at checkout!
3. Create a list and stick to it
We’ve all been there. We come home from grocery shopping and wonder where we went wrong. Or worse, we completely forget an item we specifically went to the store to get. Before you leave for your shopping adventure, be sure to plan and create a list. If you’re searching for how to save money on groceries, a little extra legwork can make a real difference to your bill. Plan your meals for the week, compare it to what you already have in your pantry, and add the remaining items to your list.
While you’re shopping, be cognizant of your list. Doing this will ensure that you don’t end up with impulse purchases, which can rack up your grocery bill. This will also ensure that you have all the items needed to grill, simmer, and sauté all week!
4. Store brands vs. name brands
Many of your favorite name brand products have a store brand dupe – you just have to be on the lookout for them! Before adding that name brand canned good in your grocery cart, look around nearby shelves to see if you can find a comparable store/generic brand product instead. In many cases, these products are less expensive and can help you save big.
5. Avoid pre-packaged items
Although pre-cut and pre-shredded items can save you time when preparing a meal, these products are typically more expensive. In other words, stores end up charging you a higher price because they did the work for you. Instead, buy what you need, and slice and dice on your own. Plus, doing the work on your own will make the final product that much sweeter and rewarding!
6. Join wholesale clubs
Wholesale clubs like Sam’s Club and Costco can help you save by buying in bulk. Buying in bulk is a great idea for those with large families. Keep in mind that you will be paying more for the product up front but you will be saving in the long run (price per item).
It’s also helpful to note that many wholesale clubs come with a membership fee. Again, the cost may be worth it for those that will frequent the store, or have a large quantity of grocery needs.
