What is a credit union?

A Credit Union is a member-owned and operated financial institution. Each member is an OWNER, SAVER and potential BORROWER. A Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial organization formed on the premise of "People Helping People." A group of people wishing to control their financial destiny pool their money as savings and make low-cost loans to each other. In turn, as the loans are repaid, the interest received is used to pay dividends to the members/owners. All earnings above expenses, reserves and retained capital are returned to the members.

What's the difference between a bank and a credit union?

Credit unions are cooperative financial institutions, owned and controlled by the people they serve, their members. Credit unions exist to serve their members, giving consumers the choice of ownership. Each member, regardless of how much is on deposit, has an equal vote in director elections.

Credit unions are not-for-profit. Operating income is returned to members in the form of higher savings rates, lower loan rates and fewer fees. Members directly benefit from participating in their credit union.
