Home Improvement Tips From Dad

Advice from pops.

How many times have you asked Dad to fix your broken dishwasher? Leaky pipe under the bathroom sink? That’s another phone call to Dad. Want to redo the cabinetry in the kitchen? Might as well just have Dad on speed dial.

In celebration of Father’s Day, we’re looking back at the best home improvement tips we’ve received from the men that seemingly do it all.

“Tools to success.”

The key to successful home improvement projects is having the necessary tools in hand. Knowing what tools are going to be needed for your project is so important. Not having the right tools is like trying to cut your grass without a lawnmower – it’s just not going to happen.

Once you know what tools you need, it’s time to gather all your equipment. If you don’t have a particular item on hand already, there are numerous ways to get what you need, including local home improvement stores, online resale sites such as eBay, or even from friends and family.

“Don’t be afraid to try something new.”

Trying something new is certainly scary…especially when it comes to home improvement projects. However, if you prepare accordingly, these projects can be incredibly rewarding. To start, it’s helpful to do your research prior to picking up your hammer or wrench. There are tons of home improvement blogs and even YouTube videos that are reliable resources to kick off project planning. In all, do your research, plan accordingly, and don’t be afraid to try something new.

“Know when to call the pros.”

Sometimes projects are just meant for the professionals. Knowing when a pro needs to get involved will save you from a huge headache in the long run. If you know that you want to do a large-scale renovation, for example, it may be ideal to set up a sinking fund within your budget in order to start saving for the project. It’s also a good idea to get an estimate from multiple professionals and view their portfolios to ensure that you’re getting the best deals for your project.

“Finish what you start.”

This tip can be easier said than done. It can become frustrating when a project surpasses your estimated timeline, budget, or even patience. It can become exceedingly more enticing to take shortcuts or even give up on project at that point. By all means, always try to finish what you start.

“See the potential in everything!”

At the end of the day, there truly is potential in everything. Your outdated kitchen has potential to become the sleek and modern kitchen shown on every HGTV series. Your bland bedroom has potential to become a restful oasis after a long day’s work. Every home has potential to be your dream home, just as every project has potential to be done successfully by you!
