Planning for Back-to-School Shopping

Planning for Back-to-School Shopping

As summer begins to wind down, those of you who are parents are probably planning your back-to-school shopping. If you haven’t already, it’s never too late to start budgeting, especially considering how much families are planning to spend before school starts this year.

According to the National Retail Federation’s 2017 surveyLink opens in a new window, families with children in elementary through high school plan on spending an average of $687.72 each on back-to-school shopping, while college students and their families plan on spending an average of $969.88.

With all of that spending in mind, Clearview has some tips to help you make your back-to-school process much smoother!

Budget

The word can sometimes be a dreaded one, but budgeting can help you make sure you don’t overspend on something that looks nice in the moment or isn’t really needed as much as it’s wanted. For an added benefit, involve your kids in the budget planning to start them off with some good money management skills!

Check around the house for things to reuse

The National Retail Federation 2017 back-to-school infographic shows that nearly 7 in 10 back-to-school shoppers plan on purchasing a brand new backpack this year instead of reusing something they already own. While the temptation to grab that shiny new backpack from the store can be strong, especially for kids, consider reusing their same backpack from last year to save!

Don’t forget to do some digging! Old rulers, pencils and pens, or even last year’s binders are still able to be used in one way or another – and you never know where they might be hiding around the house.

Shop around

Keep an eye on local store flyers for those back-to-school savings specials and clearance sales. Compare prices as much as possible and ensure you get the best bang for your buck!
