Let’s Taco ‘Bout Credit

In honor of today’s momentous occasion, National Taco Day, we wanted to taco ’bout something important to all of us…credit reports. We see it like this…take a few minutes to learn about credit history and check up on your own credit reports, then reward yourself with a taco or two. Sounds fair, right?

Free Resources
Spreading financial education and literacy is one of the foundations of every credit union, and Clearview makes it a priority to offer as many resources as possible to our members. The Financial Literacy & Education section of our website at clearviewfcu.org outlines everything from how to request your credit profile to FAQs about credit and how to define some of the terminology that comes along with credit reports.

Understanding your credit profile is one of the best things you can do for your financial future, and it’s pretty easy to do once you get started.

The most important step you can take is to regularly check your credit report.

All consumers are entitled to obtain an annual free credit report online by accessing annualcreditreport.com. You can order one free credit report from each of the three nationwide consumer reporting companies per year.

The Big Three Credit Reporting Agencies
There are only three credit reporting companies authorized by Federal law: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Requesting your free annual credit report from these three bureaus is the safest way to ensure you won’t be charged for something you’re legally entitled to for free.

You can order your free reports at the same time, or stagger your requests over the course of the year. One way to keep track of your score regularly throughout the year is to request your report from one of the three agencies every four months. If you find any mistakes on your credit report, you can dispute any inaccurate information by contacting the consumer reporting agency.

Tracking your credit reports ensures all the good things you’re doing, like paying off your loans, cell phone bill and credit cards, is working in your favor and building a strong credit history. It also allows you to make sure nothing suspicious is negatively affecting your score, like an unexpected credit line that a scammer opened up in your name. When you know your history, you’ll be better-equipped to make good habits and improve your history over time.

Spread some knowledge while you spread some guac!
Feeling like a credit expert? Spread some knowledge about financial education with your friends over tacos tonight. Or, just send them to clearviewfcu.org, so they can read up for themselves. Either way, everyone’s happy, well informed and well fed!
