Keep Your Finances Safe While Traveling

Keep Your Finances Safe While Traveling

It’s an unfortunate reality: your finances can be vulnerable while you travel. While Clearview is constantly ensuring the safety of our members’ assets, it is still important to be aware of any potential compromises that could happen during your vacation.

Here are a few tips on how to keep your accounts safe before you leave, and some best practices to utilize while accessing ATMs or Online Banking.

Before you leave, make sure your information is secure. Making a photocopy or scanning the information on your cards could save yourself a lot of time if you end up losing your wallet and need contact information for your accounts. Make sure to keep secure copies of the fronts and backs of any cards so that you are able to cancel your accounts quickly if needed.

If you need to access your accounts or pay bills online while out of town, make sure you’re using a secure network. While it may seem easy and convenient to use the coffee shop’s free WiFi network to quickly check your account balance, it can often be a dangerous move. Public networks aren’t as capable of keeping your information securely between you and your bank. If you’re using Online or Mobile Banking via your mobile device, the best course of action is to disable the WiFi and use cellular data.

It’s important to also be aware of your surroundings when using an ATM, especially when entering your PIN and receiving cash. Whenever possible, make an effort to use indoor ATMs, like the ones inside of financial institutions. This will significantly lessen the chance that your information could be skimmed by a criminal trying to gain access to your PIN or card number.
