7 Steps to a Safer Identity

Follow these steps to help keep your identity safe.

According to the Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book, the number of fraud, identity theft, and other reports totaled over 3.2 million. Of those reports, the top category was identity theft.

Identity theft can cause an incredible amount of financial stress and upheave your life. As your financial partner, we want to ensure that you’re aware of and prepared for some of the worst life can throw at you. Here are seven helpful steps to protect your identity.

1. Invest in identity theft protection

While no one is able to prevent identity theft, the next best thing is to invest in a service that will monitor your accounts and be there for you to help with recovery if identity theft should unfortunately happen.

2. Review your credit report regularly

3. Monitor accounts with your name on them

4. Shred identifying papers

The United States Postal Service delivers over 472 million pieces of mail a day – think about how much information is on each of those pieces! Every item that contains your name, your address, or any other information that identifies you or a family member should be shredded so that it can’t be used by criminals.

Any sensitive documents that you receive in the mail should be kept securely in your home (preferably in a locked filing cabinet or safe).

5. Sign up for fraud alerts

6. Create strong passwords for all of your devices and accounts

By now, you’ve heard this rule, but we’re repeating it anyway: Use a different strong password for every account you have. By doing so, you eliminate the risk of someone getting access to multiple personal accounts in the result of a data breach.
