TXTL8R Campaign

Texting while driving is a nationwide concern due to safety risks that are taken when behind the wheel. For example, texting while driving has the same effects as drinking and driving. You are 23 times more likely to get into an accident when texting and driving. And, just 5 seconds of texting while driving at 55 mph is enough time to cover 300 feet of road!

Clearview Federal Credit Union and WPXI have teamed up to promote safe texting habits through the TXTL8R campaign. The TXTL8R campaign is designed to remind drivers to “get their texts later.” In order to do this, Clearview is giving away colorful thumb bands to wear as a reminder of a pledge to practice safe texting habits.

The New Texting and Driving Law

Don’t forget, texting while driving isn’t just hazardous to your safety, it’s against the law! Due to an increased number of accidents involving cell phones, Pennsylvania has passed a new law effective March 8, 2012, that prohibits text based communication while driving.

The new law specifically does the following:

  • Makes it a primary offense to use an Interactive Wireless Communication Device (IWCD) to send, read or write a text-based message.
  • Defines an IWCD as a wireless phone, personal digital assistant, Smartphone, portable or mobile computer or similar devices that can be used for texting, instant messaging, emailing or browsing the internet.
  • Defines a text-based message as a text message, instant message, email or other written communication composed or received on an IWCD.
  • Institutes a $50 fine for convictions.
  • Makes clear that this law supersedes and preempts any local ordinances restricting the use of interactive wireless devices by drivers.
